Key Medicine Shortages - November 2020

Monthly Update

 

1.  Haloperidol 5mg/5ml oral solution sugar free is unavailable from manufacturer, Thame Laboratories. Limited supplies remain available from Pinewood Healthcare, however, haloperidol (Haldol®) 2mg/ml oral solution, and haloperidol tablets in various strengths remain available. If required, specials manufacturers can manufacture haloperidol 5mg/5ml oral solution sugar free.

2.  Salazopyrin En-Tabs® (sulfasalazine) 500mg tablets are unavailable from the manufacturer, Pfizer. Generic versions of sulfasalazine 500mg gastro-resistant tablets remain available. UKMI have advised there are no known differences in bioavailability between branded and generic sulfasalazine, therefore, they are considered interchangeable.

Why do medicine shortages occur?
Medicine shortages occur for a variety of reasons, including difficulties sourcing raw materials, product recalls for safety reasons, changes to licence holder, and changes to pack sizes.
It is vitally important that medicine shortages are monitored and appropriate actions taken, to minimise impact on patient care.
