Key Medicine Shortages – July 2021

Monthly Update

1. Acetylcysteine (NACSYS®) 600mg effervescent tablets - there are current distribution issues with this product, rather than a true shortage.

Please refer to Current Medicine Supply Problems and Shortages page on StaffNet for more information or contact prescribing@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

2. Dexamethasone (Maxidex®) 0.1% eye drops 5ml (multi-dose container containing preservative) - supplies of this product are limited until early August 2021 due to a manufacturing issue. Preservative-free and alternative steroid eye drops remain available in single dose and multi-dose containers and collectively can support an uplift in demand.

Please note: Maxidex® 0.1% eye drops, 10ml bottle size, has been discontinued.

For further information please refer to the Department of Health Supply Disruption Alert on StaffNet.

Why do medicine shortages occur?
