Key Medicine Shortages – November 2021

Monthly Update

  1. Acebutolol (Sectral®) 100mg capsules – these have been discontinued with stock expected to be exhausted by the end of November 2021. Acebutolol 200mg capsules and 400mg tablets remain available and can support an increase in demand.

  2. Alliance Calcium Syrup (calcium gluconate 544mg and calcium lactate 276mg in 5ml – equivalent to 20.4mg [0.51mmol] of calcium in 1ml) - this food supplement has been discontinued following a long period out of stock.

  3. Tocilizumab (RoActemra®) 162mg/0.9ml solution for injection pre-filled syringes and pre-filled pens – Non Covid-19 indications – these are in limited supply until January 2022.

Why do medicine shortages occur?
Medicine shortages occur for a variety of reasons, including difficulties sourcing raw materials, product recalls for safety reasons, changes to licence holder, and changes to pack sizes.
It is vitally important that medicine shortages are monitored and appropriate actions taken, to minimise impact on patient care.
